Textile manufacturer Ventile is embracing the sustainability agenda by producing its first line of recycled cotton fabric in the company’s 76-year history.

The new fabric has been designed to achieve the best possible balance of performance, comfort, and sustainability in a bid to reduce overall textile waste and to create a durable and environmentally friendly resource for designers and fashion brands looking to create bags, coats and jackets.

Ventile recycled cotton fabric is made from pre-consumer cotton; textile waste which is left over from fabric production. The raw fabric offcuts are firstly sorted by type or colour and are then shredded down to fine fibres. These fibres are spun into new yarns which make up the finished recycled fabric roll. Using Ventile pre-consumer cotton maintains stable cotton fabric integrity.

“It is the perfect time to test the ability of recycled cotton and develop a new environmentally-friendly performance fabric to be part of Ventile’s range. It is important that this recycled cotton range is committed to connecting social and environmental awareness with beautiful, well-made and performance-driven clothing and while we do so, we can only expect demand for fabrics like this to rise over the coming years,” said Daniel Odermatt, Production Manager at Ventile.

In 2014 alone, the US produced 16 million tons of textile waste, at an increase of almost 50% in the last 20 years. At an industry level, by using cotton scraps, recycled cotton fabric production reduces the pressure on virgin resources, minimises the volume of water used and reduces pollution from pesticides. Recycled cotton is thought to minimise the climate impact by over 75% versus that used by virgin cotton fibres.

The new line of recycled cotton fabric from Ventile has been developed to offer designers and fashion brands the future in fabric technology. Designers are currently able to order the 400g/m2 canvas in three colourways: charcoal, olive, and white stone.
