Traders in China textile market acted cautiously after the Lantern Festival, as well as cotton/rayon yarn and polyester/rayon yarn mills. Downstream production did not yet fully recovered and upstream feedstock did not keep firm. Spinners mostly stood on the sidelines. Vortex-spun rayon yarn quotation moved up, so spinners can be patient and wait.
Operating rate
Spinners received orders before the Spring Festival holidays, such as siro-spun one orders were available to Mar. Profits were tolerable amid previous stocks of low-priced feedstock. Therefore, rayon yarn mills showed strong willingness to produce products. In order to resume production as soon as possible, spinners increased workers’ wages. Situation of returning to work was better than that in last year. Operating rate of rayon yarn around the Lantern Festival basically recovered to 70-80% or even higher.
Inventory
Although holidays of spinners are shorter than that of downstream, operating rate recovered faster. However, sales pressure was not large mainly because pre-holiday inventory destocked and spinners focused on producing previous orders before and after the Spring Festival holidays. Yarn mills delivered products normally after recovery of logistics. Yarn inventory of most spinners in Jiangsu and Zhejiang was available for half a month or lower. Vortex-spun rayon yarn mills quoted up by 300yuan/mt firstly amid lower inventory.
Feedstock
VSF replenishment of spinners can be available to Mar amid pre-holiday orders. Supply is expected to be loose as VSF plants larger inventory pressure and operating rate did not drop evidently despite existing replenishment demand. Therefore, spinners are not in a hurry to purchase VSF. Yarn prices performed stable to firm supported by stocks and feedstock.
Figure VSF inventory and operating rate
All in all, spinning mills performed well in the industrial chain. On the one hand, the market in H1 2018 mainly depended on sales of March-April in traditional peak season, and spinners only needed to wait for the recovery and release of downstream demand. On the other hand, eyes are suggested to further discussion.
